the conspiracy: Most Americans mistakenly think that Watergate is synonymous with President Richard Nixon's abuse of presidential power. But the real scandal wasn't a Republican White House run amok. Rather, the true outrage was a Democratic Congress that used an investigative witch-hunt to cover up its nefarious effort to install Senator Ted Kennedy in the Oval Office. Among the "Camelot conspirators": Hillary Rodham, a suspiciously powerful and sneaky Watergate investigation staffer fresh out of law school.

the conspiracy theorists: Geoff Shepard, a former Nixon White House official with a 35-year-old chip on his shoulder and a new book to peddle, The Secret Plot to Make Ted Kennedy President. The Watergate-as-Kennedy-steppingstone idea has also been floated by Jerry Zeifman, former chief counsel to the House Judiciary Committee, who claims that Rodham and other Democrats sought to drag out the scandal to "enhance the prospect of Senator Kennedy or another liberal Democrat being elected president in 1976."

meanwhile, back on earth: Who cares, and why now? This new spin on Watergate sounds like a nonstarter. But never underestimate the potential for conservative radio and blogs to run with a wacky theory, especially one that discredits congressional inquiries into Republican high crimes and misdemeanors, and—even better—casts Hillary Clinton as a twentysomething Machiavelli and takes down Barack Obama's biggest senatorial supporter.

Kookiness Rating: tin foil hattin foil hattin foil hattin foil hat (1=maybe they're on to something, 5=break out the tinfoil hat!)

What I do know is that Hillary Rodham was fired from the team for lying and fabricating evidence. She hasn't changed a bit.

Hillary Clinton also had a role in that underground activity, did she not? And her devious and untruthful ruthlessness to prosecute Nixon was quite radical as a young intern hired and fired to investigate Nixon. Her personality was apparent even at that age and continues to this day as the most untrustworthy Politicaian in Washington. I am a liberal also, but the Clinton's have damaged this country more than any other.

Anyone stupid enough to believe either of the Clintons is a genuine liberal is stupid enough to believe that George Dubya Bush is a real fiscal conservative.

OK, so then what was she up to? It's alloeged by her then-boss that in order to argue that Nixon had no right to counsel, she actually removed documents from the secure governemnt files (ala Sandy Berger). If true, what was she doing? Her boss (a Dem) argued that she was trying to make sure her boss didn't bring up any Camelot deeds for perspective. Maybe?

In 1964 Hillary Rodham was a Goldwater girl. She does move around, doesn't she?

"and takes down Barack Obama's biggest senatorial supporter."

How does this effect John Kerry?

HRC is no Obama supporter in action - her words have been nice but we have yet to see much beyond stroking her ginormous ego.

Drag out the Watergate scandal??? I sure as heck hope so! The office of the President should be beyond reproach. Dragging out a scandal for political advantage? Every single politician does that. Fabricating or destroying government documents? Should be a crime of the highest order, along the lines of a high crime, eh?

"Maybe five irrelevents makes more sense?"

I have no idea what you're trying to say. It makes NO sense to me.

The HRC as birdcage lining does though.

Although I am mistrustful of Hillary Clinton, this conspiracy theory definitely deserves five tinfoil hats. What's amazing, and conspiratorial is that Bush, the most impeachable president EVER, hasn't been touched, and is now going to probably bomb Iran and put gas prices over the 10 dollar a gallon mark--not to mention all the killin'. George loves the killin'.
Posted by:AlanJune 18, 2008 12:45:28 PMRespond ^
Rick, as an adult, you really should learn proper punctuation and grammer. Clinton didn't balance the budget--he got lucky, and left at a time when our crazy economic policies were in their "boom" instead of "bust" cycle. It was Clinton who revived NAFTA and got it signed into law. Clinton also cut welfare benefits, employee benefits, increased this senseless war on drugs, and began spying on Americans under the program Echelon. No,the Clintons weren't as bad as Bush..but then, who is? Oh, that's right--Cheney, and McCain! McCain, a man that would make a joke out of the bombing of Iran, an action that would kill God knows how many innocent civilians. They all love to kill things--brown people, and small furry animals. What men they are! McCain graduated # 894 out of 899 cadets at his Naval Academy. I'm sorry he got captured, but maybe if he'd been a better soldier it wouldn't have happened. You would think going through that would make him anti-war, but no...so, I lost my sympathy for him when he told the Beach Boys joke about bomb bomb bomb, bomb Iran. I don't know if someone wrote that gem for him, or if he came up with it on his own, but it was of spectacularly bad taste, and shows that the man learned nothing from his experiences in war. He doesn't, of his own admission, understand economics, either--and we certainly need someone who does right now. This economic plight we face is far worse than what we're being lead to believe, and if we bomb Iran, it will certainly be worse than the Great Depression. It's funny that we bomb the countries that don't have any weapons, even though they're minding their own business (unless you believe the Bush/Pentagon propaganda) yet we leave the most horrible regimes, like North Korea, alone--because they do have bombs. Isn't that sending a message to countries that it would be smart to get some nukes?
And what about us? Why is it that it's okay for us to have nuclear weapons--the only people who have actually used them, on one country, twice! What gives us the right to decide who gets to defend themselves? If anyone tried that with us, or tried to put bases on our lands, we wouldn't stand for it! Why do we expect others to be happy with the situation?
We're a big bully, and eventually the neighborhood will gang up on us to teach us a lesson. The world hates us because we're like a corrupt cop policing the world, lately. Once, this nation was truly great..it was a beacon of light. I'm afraid the same scenario that plays out in the new Star Wars movies has happened to us. They got this from a Nazi: "To get people to do what you want, just tell them they are being constantly attacked by an ever-prevasive enemy, and denounce any peacemakers as being unpatriotic."
That was from one of Hitler's top Nazis..either Himmler or Goering, I believe.

"Watergate was a conspiracy to get Teddy elected President"...Really? And all this time I thought it was because Nixon broke the law, spied on Americans, ran dirty tricks, bombed innocent countries, broke into Campaign offices, hired "the plumbers" like Hunt and Liddy and the Bay of Pigs Cubans, and generally violated the Constitution.

And all along it was Hillary trying to help Teddy? Give me a break!

Nixon was a Crook...he got caught...he was impeached and he resigned. Period! Get over it!

Hillary Clinton at twentysomething was in a city full of Old lawyers, at the time the generation gap was set at 30, still before the hippes turned into yuppies - no way she could be trusted at all at that age and at that time among so many older lawyers.

Next book will have her at the Grassy Knoll, probably might use her cozy talk about her granpa teaching her to shoot at the cabin on the lake - and who really caused Teddy to lose his control of the car and dive into a river...hmmm?

One thing I am sure the Kenndys did Know, as did the Clintons is that Bush's grand father was not a good man at all and an easy target for dirt dureing both Bush's champaignes.
Prescott Bush really did try to over throw the American government and instal a facsit regime instead - and we only Just learned about in this Bush's 7th year? The records of Prescott's Bush's trial for treason by the congress is fully published and was available for a Brithish BBC reporter to uncover and the Democratic candidates to use - but the fact should have surfaced when Bush Sr was running for VP with Reagan.

Well - it a conspirecy thread, so anyone with UFOs and Alien abductions can join in - right?

Hey capt, its about Ted Kennedy, the guy who endorsed BHO just before the super Tuesday primary remember? Also rick take note: real, honest, thoughtful, hard working Americans who are willing to suspend party loyalty and ask the hard questions about their former leaders will never forgive the Clintons for pushing their elitist job sapping DLC free trade agenda on the US, and for all their running around supporting the utterly foolish Bush war agenda.

allan ..i appologize, but grammar was a cheap shot, and ill take it for what its worth...any way the points you make as to our forgien policy are close to my own, i was in complete amazement, when we decided to invade iraq, i believe they were not the threat that was being portrayed and it could and should have been handled differently, the information that was being put out to the country at the time was criminal, and the presses challenge to tyhat information was gutless, we do tend to take on weaker nations in order to make ourselves look tough, that i agree with you..as a senitor from new york , where 911 took place , i feel hillary was under a tremendious amount of pressure to vote the way she did, with info put out...but it is not couragess to say you didnt vote for it when you werent in office, that is a fairy tale, the overwhelming majority of congress and the senate went along unfortunutly with the vote, whitch was not a declaration, but only the right to use force if nessicary...they were misled , in my opinion, so was colin powell...but any way, i just really get tired of the bashing on hillary, i dont understand it, i think its unfair, and unfortunutly fashionable among some who want to bring attention to themselves, by some reflective glory that by sliming her ,puttng her down means i have an understanding of the issues and political insight...frustrating for me i think she s incredabily gifted ,brave and intellegent..most who put her down have not done a fraction of what she has

Neither the Democrats nor the Republicans are fit to govern the United States of America, for they are both extremely corrupt. Although governments tend to reflect the society they serve, it is time to demand a greater political/economical system, since this country holds great influence over global affairs. The United States has managed to corrupt the entire world with a exploitative, polluting corporate globalization, and an entertainment industry filled with violence, and unintelligent content, which influences adolescents who then reflect what they see by killing everyone at school.

Have you considered that it is time to expand your minds, and stop the manipulation? Demand greater ethical standards from your society, and your corporate government. The dumbing down of the masses is quite convenient to a government that stole the elections, and got away with it with impunity. Shortly after Bush junior invaded Iraq, -without even finishing the job in Afghanistan just like his father who in the first invasion of Iraq did not depose Saddam Hussein - to steal the resources of this country, he hired his cronies in lucrative, mercenary contracts. Americans continue to sleep while the mismanagement of their country's resources are being siphoned away, and they continue to accept the most appalling health system, and the exploitation of greedy Corporations that keep the minimum salary at $5.80/h, while the top management is making millions.

Both Bush senior and junior are members of the "Skull & Bones" brotherhood that stands for death, and piracy. They rule the world in secrecy spreading misery, and suffering to suit their pathological inclinations. This is why now there is the nuclear proliferation all over the world, despite the fact that scientists still do not know how to neutralize radioacitivity. They supplement carbon oil and coal energies with another polluting "life killing" energy, and no one raises an eye brow, and questions why is it that Solar, Wind and Geo-Thermal green technologies are not proliferating around the globe? Nikola Tesla had the technology to supply for free all the energy needs of the world but the "robber Baron" J.P. Morgan was disgusted when Tesla mentioned the word "for free";and now the planet is seventy percent polluted, facing global warming, and the war in Iraq. The American people are being robbed, and poisoned right under their noses, and they do not take action to defend their rights. The middle class will soon join the poor class for they are under some kind of severe somnambulism, or perhaps is all that McDonald's irradiated, innutritious food they consume daily, that prevents them to break the hypnotic spell.

Greed and a distorted political view is killing our planet, and humanity. The corporate Executives copycat King Midas, ruthlessly, at the cost of life on planet Earth, with the only aim of satisfying their own self-importance, and the demands of usurious shareholders. Wall Street belongs in the past together with capitalism, and no longer is viable in a planet that is facing monumental natural challenges. These great challenges have to be met, if we are to survive in a globe with six and half billion people with wasteful lifestyles, and little consideration towards natural resources.

The similarities between the Bushs and Clintons are as clear as a azure sky. The fighting of proxy wars and invasions of "terrorist," states is a diversionary tactic. Civil liberties, economic distortions of criminal intent are easliy acessed and changed, though war. "the ability to control a thing, is to destroy a thing." "Oh, and was that "senator" or "janitor" from New York you claim to be?"

Thanks, Legible. In that one comment you illustrated why middle-class democrats have so much trouble relating to blue-collar democrats. As a janitor and a liberal democrat, I am disgusted by your spoiled snobbery. As someone who is old enough to remember the 1970's, I am aware that many people would have done anything to bring down tricky Dick, the worst president before W. And bitter experience has taught me that Mr. squeaky clean Obama is in it just as deep as any other politician. You idealistic kids will be faced with that ugly truth someday. For now, paddle around in your privileged denial. The rest of us have to live - and clean toilets in - the real world.

Nixon deserved far more than simple impeachment,he should have sat his last natural days in prison. Were you even alive,or of voting age when Nixon was president?Who,as a recent president has damaged the country? Reagan was number one but has been far outpaced by George W. Bush.He has done some much damage to our country it will take half of this century to repair.Ever since the republican revolution of the eighties America has been in decline and will continue to decline as long as we are ruled by the corporate representatives in our government.America is no longer number one in much of anything but the destruction of civilization as a whole.

H. Clinton as a college student also worked a summer job in a progressive Oakland CA law firm that was at the time representing high-profile defendants like the Black Panthers.

That is, she was in a perfect position to report on the doings of that law firm. This was during the height of government anti-war, anti-progressive spying. The FBI's COINTELPRO was run by a young Warren Christopher back then, who turned up as Bill Clinton's Secretary of State years later. H. Clinton, on the Dems' Watergate legal team, would have again been in position to observe and report to anyone interested in what was known by the Dems and what their plans were.

Who would want to know about developments in the Watergate prosecution? Well, how about the folks who left the flaming bag of poo on Nixon's doorstep?

Everyone in the burglary team was CIA-connected. Alexander Butterfield was a "former" CIA employee. When you see who leaked what and at what time it becomes clear that the Agency had more than a rooting interest in the outcome.

We have found out that Deep Throat was an FBI bigwig, Mark Felt. If you read Woodward's story on his first meeting with Felt you may have noted that Woodward was a courier from the Pentagon to the White House, carrying top-secret information. He was actually working for the Office of Naval Intelligence, with top-secret clearance. (His editor, Ben Bradlee, worked out of the CIA's Paris office in the early fifties on a propaganda campaign to smear the Rosenbergs.) Funny how during the decades of searching for Deep Throat no one took into account Woodward's employment history.

Clinton's misbehavior during Watergate may have been more than an eruption of some character disorder. It may have been an assignment.

When one considers that much of the cocaine from the 80s Iran-contra experienced rained down on a corner of Arkansas when Bill Clinton was governor (and later-to-be Drug Czar Asa Hutchinson was the federal prosecutor), one begins wondering how connected the Clintons have been to our intelligence agencies.

If instead of accepting the Right's interpretation of the Clintons as radical left-wingers (which is easily dismissed if viewing the legislative accomplishments during Bill Clinton's two terms as President), it appears that the Clintons have been insiders, good soldiers for reactionaries running this country. Maybe in their earlier days they already were on their career path.

[Note that no Kennedys were harmed in the making of this post.]

I recall that Norman Mailer wrote an article saying that Haldemann's burglars were actually breaking into a Fed Reserve office in the same Watergate block- to acquire and use sensitive financial information so as that CREEP would have greater blackops finance.

The real tendentious stuff is the re-presentation of Watergate as a comedy of manners.
